Grey’s Anatomy season eleven continues to unfold with each episode and like the wine it gets better with the years. In this case season eleven gets better and better with each episode.
This season marks Grey’s Anatomy rebirth- the new beginning, the fresh start and the anticipation of what the future holds for all the characters. However, this is not the case of the show being reinvented or rediscovered. Why? Because Grey’s Anatomy has a ten- year old history, history of storytelling of heartbreaks, breakdowns, gut- wrenching moments and moments of intensity.
Since the onset of season eleven viewers have been constantly reminded of the characters’ history through flashbacks and call-back references. But also the new roads and journeys have been set in stone which the characters have already embarked on. Perhaps the die-hard fans of the show would be the ones to really appreciate the delightfulness of the current season. It’s like looking through the mirrors of time- same, but different, refreshed and matured.
“The Distance” is another episode which showed how far certain characters have come. Moreover, it presented these characters’ ability to stand out, to “fight the good fight”, to stand their ground, reclaim whatever has been theirs all along and be capable of emerging behind their shadows and shells.
Last Thursday night Amelia Shepherd was in the limelight, on the hot seat. She proudly took the challenge of Dr. Herman’s case and fought until the very end. But what happened in between was the most beautiful and the most human experience- her struggles when Dr. Herman’s surgery became a reality, her moment of almost throwing in the towel, the desperation, the helplessness and self-doubt. All this is what made her superhero, not the fact that she conquered an impossible tumour. She fought the battle with grace, like a true warrior. She was fighting for the right cause with good intentions. That’s what took her on the other side. Now her star will shine among all the other neurosurgeons stars, but it will shine with a different light and intensity from all the others, simply because there is only one Amelia Shepherd.
Same goes for Dr. Robbins. Her own fiasco with the pregnant woman and Bailey was like a déjà-vu. The audience has been thrown back in time and caught in the present moment at the same time. Dr. Robbins has been reintroduced and re-emerged from the shell she had been put for several season. Herman’s words and Arizona’s first successful solo surgery were enough and spoke volumes- Dr. Robbins is indeed the right woman for the job.
The fetal surgery fellowship storyline and the presence of Dr. Herman pulled Dr. Robbins out of the mud. The perky, confident doctor finally reclaimed herself, her confidence, her joy and her privilege. Furthermore, Dr. Herman survived to provide a valuable life lesson not only for Arizona but also for us all- losing your eyesight is not the point, the point is you’re still here, still alive; the point is what is going to happen next. (This would have been a beneficial and useful piece of advice for Arizona after her post amputation period).
Herman’s words “I’m alive” is what makes her a superhero too.
As for Dr. Robbins, her superhero moment was not the one of triumph in the OR, but the moments she opened up to Callie and the viewers; when she showed her vulnerability, her feelings, and her so human emotions. Callie and Arizona’s scenes were another déjà-vu, another moment of travelling back in time- it was familiar and nostalgic, but different and new. This wasn’t an intimate moment between a couple; this was a very raw and honest moment of support and compassion between two human beings. And for that moment Callie wasn’t whining or complaining or jealous. It was a moment when you let yourself simply be.
Grey’s Anatomy writers delivered another stellar and well-written episode. The intensity combined with the slightly dark sense of humour made the episode enjoyable and refreshing but also refreshed our memories with good lines and mirror scenes.
Pick the good fight, peeps! And fight it with all your might!
