The foundations of season eleven have been laid down with the first five episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. Now, moving into the sixth instalment of the season, it’s all about time and only time will tell its tale. Behind the trauma protocols, the regrets, the worries, the broken hearts and the workload in Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, one major factor with a significant role, is the time.
Between mourning the lost time and running against the clock, the doctors of Grey’s Anatomy brought the medicine back to life and reclaimed their status as actual medical practitioners. The patients and their health problems finally found their way back and slowly started to emerge from the shadow of the doctors’ personal life issues.
But we know the show won’t be able to function properly without the personal drama. The tricky thing for the writers is to the reach this magical equilibrium where professional and personal drama will bring Grey’s Anatomy back to the roots of its success. Otherwise the show will keep looking like a mental case with multiple personality’s disorder. Episode six is a good example that this balance is doable and achievable.
Case in point!
Between managing the ER and her mother’s visit, April Kepner unleashed a very bad crazy and poured it all over her mother’s perkiness and sweetness. But since the new ‘daddy to be’ is under the Kepners’ spell, he managed to tame the madness and restore the peace and sanity in the family. The Kepner- Avery household got the balancing formula right.
He- Shepherd tried to work out the same equation. He was more enthusiastic to play family guy than clipping aneurisms. Instead of scolding his wife and Webber, like naughty children, over their reluctance for having a bio- family reunion dinner, he should have thought of inviting his own sister and convince us in his unconditional love for happy, messy family. When Derek wasn’t dancing around Meredith’s relatives, he was adopting his usual meditative state of passive aggressive and when convenient to call a ‘time-out’. Meredith and Derek are dancing with the devil and tiptoeing the line of a major family feud. Dr. Grey keeps touching very sensitive nerves and unknowingly building a ticking time bomb. Steamy showers and time-outs ain’t gonna lessen the blow.
The doctor who needs some time-out is Dr. Bailey and her hypocrisy on healthy lifestyle. Maybe adopting the perks of a healthy diet could turn her into ambassador of public health promotion, who will decrease the death rate of the population and prolong people’s life.
If only food was the panacea for all health problems…
Dr. Bailey might be thinking that soon she will drop dead, but the actual doctor whose days are numbered is Dr. Herman- a plot twist in the typical Grey’s style. The whole tough love, the razor- like words, the pressure, which Dr. Robbins has been swallowing like bitter pills for a while, was because the Ice Queen is actually running out of time, slowly dying. Now the ball, a very dangerous ball on fire with a timer on it, is in Dr. Robbins’ hands. Her morals and ethics have been put to a very challenging test. At this point Dr. Robbins’ choices are: either go big and later deal with the consequences or go home.
What does it mean for Arizona?
Right now, the woman is trying to come to terms with Callie’s decision. There is anger, bitterness and a great deal of self blame. She keeps holding herself completely responsible and accountable for her failed marriage. She feels like she sold her soul to the devil by trading the sanctity of marriage for a fancy fellowship.
On the other hand, Arizona Robbins is finding her voice back, slowly but surely. She didn’t bite her tongue when she spoke to Callie. She even took the courage to stand up for herself in front of Dr. Herman. The Phoenix is on the rise, emerging from the ashes with plenty of struggle.
The rebirth of Arizona Robbins is one hell of a delicious storyline. Great things sometimes come at a very high price and after all right now Dr. Robbins has nothing to lose; on the contrary she will have quite a lot to gain. It’s risky and dangerous, but she already is on the playground. She just has to remember how to play dirty. There is no going back and most of all there is something so exciting and thrilling about Arizona Robbins going rouge.
Stay healthy, peeps! Rouge on with style!
