Every story has two sides. Every puzzle requires a particular amount of time to be solved. In every chaos there is an order.
The things we ignore are usually the ones that need our utmost attention. This was the case when the character of Dr. Margaret (Maggie) Pierce was first introduced into the Grey’s universe towards the end of season 10. She was handpicked by Cristina Yang herself as the new Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Probably, most people didn’t acknowledge her, accepted her as another prop on the set and thought of her as the doctor whose name we would hear now and then but not see…
Until this ‘invisible’ doctor revealed her secret to Dr. Webber in season 10 finale and the game changed once again.
Last Thursday Dr. Pierce took over Meredith Grey’s voiceover and finally introduced herself to the audience. Meredith’s half- sister came into the world as a result of Ellis Grey and Richard Webber’s profound and passionate love affair. Ms Rhimes and Co. have been hiding from us this sister for 10 years. Somewhere, out there this Maggie person has been existing. It shouldn’t come as a surprise her narrating the episode. It’s not the first time when a guest star narrates a Grey’s episode (season 5 episode 13 was narrated by the actor playing Denny Duquette).
Throughout the episode we saw who Dr. Pierce is- confident, persistent and naturally curious person, who knows how to bring the thunder, a devoted doctor who passionately loves her job; where she came from and what her life looks like. She is still experiencing hard time in adjusting herself in this new environment as opposed to Dr. Amelia Shepherd who feels quite cosy and homey at Grey Sloan Memorial and who may turn out to be Maggie’s new friend at the hospital. Dr. Bailey is another candidate for being Maggie’s friend and they may create this special friendship bond based on their mutual interest in genome mapping.
However, not everyone was nice and warm to Dr. Pierce, who found herself in a very awkward and uncomfortable position on a few occasions. Avery, for example, considers himself such an important person that handshaking is not part of his mannerism. Thanks to Alex’ chatty girlfriend Dr. Pierce got dubbed ‘blabbermouth’ and charming Arizona Robbins provided the funniest and sincere line “you’re nice and full of crap”, which describes Dr. Pierce quite accurately.
Things between Maggie and Meredith are going from bad to worse. Meredith Grey continues to see some fault with the new-comer Dr. Pierce, second guessing her abilities as a doctor. Dr. Pierce, on the other hand is trying to bridge the gap between the two of them, putting some effort to solve the Meredith Grey puzzle with some input from Richard and Amelia. Even when she dropped this huge bombshell, revealing that her birthmother was Ellis Grey, Meredith’s attitude went from icy to icier and completely shut her out. Though, Meredith was left full of curiosity and suspicion. Now the ball is her hands and she is the one to decide whether to delve further into her mother’s past or leave things the way they are. And the truth is, things are very frustrating and maddening between these two doctors.
Speaking of maddening and frustrating, two other ladies are driving some of the fans up the walls. Yes, exactly, that would be Callie and Arizona. Despite the Maggie Pierce centred episode, the writers squeezed a little time to take a baby step in Callie and Arizona’s storyline. Those two women don’t want just anything, they want everything. At least Callie came around and realized that she can’t be the only one wanting things and she is not the only one who has a career to tend to. Some see Callie Torres as a selfish person, others tend to label Arizona Robbins with this very same word. Truth is, Callie and Arizona don’t know how to want things together and get those things together as a couple, as a team. Instead of working together, they mess things up, leave them pile up because apparently they are not into cleaning very much and sometimes their relationship doesn’t make sense at all. This couple is like a mixed-up, upside down puzzle with scattered missing pieces.
Let’s wish Callie and Arizona good luck (because they need it) in solving their messy puzzle.
While Callie and Arizona will be spending some time playing with their own puzzle, another one was solved- the curious case of the McNeal’s. It was a really nice touch from the writers to honour Cristina Yang’s last tough case, where three siblings were dropping like domino pieces with cardiomyopathy in the previous season. Through Dr. Pierce’s curiosity and Bailey’s I- don’t- give- a- shit attitude, Yang’s greatness was acknowledged once again and Dr. Pierce won Chief’s Hunt respect and proved herself to be the right person for the job.
Pick a puzzle, people! Solve it! And don’t forget to bring the thunder if you have to!
