Quite some time ago I was wasting time … errrr, I mean casually browsing the internet (/smirk) and as it often does it led me to Grey’s Anatomy related stuff. While lost somewhere in the crazy universe that is the World Wide Web (tumblr, or twitter, or something like that … I honestly don’t remember the original source) I came upon a simple question that someone posed. This question sparked a very interesting trail of thoughts that I’ve just had sitting in the back of my mind since. Not really actively thinking upon it until recent developments within Grey’s canon. The question was somewhat along the lines of:
What if, when Grey’s airs its last episode, we discover Meredith had Alzheimer’s from the beginning?
Slightly crazy thoughts and theories rolled around in my head while I contemplated this, thinking it quite intriguing, but I didn’t really consider it much afterwards.
Well, we all know in the world of Grey’s nothing is really too crazy to actually be deemed crazy. Pretty much anything is fair game. I mean, we’ve had ghost sex, a shooting, bombs inside bodies, planes falling out of the sky, heart surgery in an elevator, and a musical. I think “crazy” falls in the realm of “normal” for Grey’s.
So, with that in mind… we know Alzheimer’s is a very likely possibility for Meredith. Anyone who says the show hasn’t foreshadowed that Mer is gonna get Alzheimer’s is likely someone who has never watched the show, or at least not regularly. So, let’s say Mer ends up with Alzheimer’s… that’s her eventual fate… just as her mother before her. That first magical episode in which we all fell in love with Grey’s Anatomy, we see Meredith visiting with Ellis and in subsequent episodes we see Ellis recall events of her past through conversations with Meredith. Ok, keep that thought.
Have you ever really paid much attention to Grey’s consistent use of voiceovers throughout every episode? Every. Episode! That’s can’t be just a cute storytelling device, that’s purposeful. So, let the crazy theories roll.
Meredith, with her Alzheimer’s, has been placed into a home just as her mother was. These voiceovers are times in which Meredith is talking to someone (or sometimes talking to herself) telling stories of memories she has when they occasionally come back to her. As she’s telling the stories, we see it played out on the screen.
So what about the voiceovers from other characters? I’m so glad you asked. Based on the incredibly close ties the doctors of GSMH have formed with each other, I find it likely that they would come visit Mer from time to time. And surely they would have conversations with her, or in times that she’s not lucid they would simply come and tell her stories of their memories of years past. And these are the times in which we hear their voiceovers; we’re seeing that story (or part of the story) told from their point of view.
Now, with this theory in place, think about what’s coming up with Derek and car crashes. I’ve seen a number of people referring to the dream Meredith had about Derek being in a car accident. Well, we know he’s going to be helping crash victims in 11.21. What if …. this is strictly a WHAT IF … while he’s out of his car helping people, a car comes by and hits him as well. So, this makes me think Mer’s “dream” wasn’t actually a dream at all, it was one of her memories and we are now going to be taken to that point in her timeline to see that it actually did happen. Factor in the police lights that showed up at the end of 11.20 and it makes it an even scarier potential happening.
Again, just crazy theories and speculation. Have fun with it. See you Thursday night!
