Under the sounds of the R&B music, “a shuttle after shuttle has been sent to the moon” during Grey’s Anatomy episode “Man On The Moon”. Some doctors landed there successfully- Callie and Derek’s brain mapping project marked its success when their patient was able to move her artificial hand; Cristina saved a baby’s life with a 3D printer, while others faced failure- Meredith’s first 3D printed portal vein implant resulted into a dead sheep. Those of the doctors, who were left on solid ground had to deal with their earthly problems- wedding shower, broken hearts, relatives showing up and accepting the reality of having mental issues.
A few days have passed when the mid season Grey’s Anatomy finale took us on yet another wedding. And to be a real Grey’s wedding things had to go south, this time with a love confession in the middle of the ceremony serving as the main cliffhanger. During the hour, the doctors kept moving further with their medical projects, mending their broken hearts, performing risky surgeries and engaging in furry and honest dialogs.
The Calzona universe wasn’t much of a place where one would like to be. Callie and Arizona were trying to pick up the shattered pieces of their marriage. In her typical Arizona way, Dr. Robbins put a tremendous amount of effort to engage her wife in casual and light conversations. These efforts were quite unsuccessful, because Callie Torres once again was rolling the hospital halls like a nervous ball- frustrated, edgy and tensed up to the point where she started losing patience with her patient and even picked up a fight with Derek. While Dr. Torres was fighting on her way ‘to the moon’, in the meantime Dr. Robbins had the honour to meet Kepner’s sisters, who turned out to be extremely chatty ladies but sincerely honest. One of them even slightly crashed Arizona’s hopes on repairing her marriage by sharing her own experience with adulterous spouse. By the end of the episode Dr. Robbins was pronounced as a bridesmaid to April’s wedding. However, apparently the fights with the wife haven’t ceased just yet. Obviously after so many verbal fights, Callie and Arizona didn’t know what they were fighting about anymore. The last exchange of high pitched voices ended with a surprising twist, when Callie grabbed Arizona and kissed her passionately. Maybe the kiss was needed to show not only to Arizona but to us, the viewers as well, that despite everything Callie still has affection for her wife.
The most disturbing part for all of us is the lack of actual commutation between Callie and Arizona, the lack of talking about how they feel, what they feel and why they feel it. They just ride this emotional wave separately, expecting magically things to fall into their places.
Case in point- Dr. Robbins was able to open up to April and spill her guts with one of her speeches, but was incapable to say those same words to her wife. The wife, who probably keeps a tremendous amount of guilt over the broken promise, the wife who turned into a fixer and keeps trying to give back what she took away from Arizona over a year ago. Apparently, Dr. Robbins doesn’t need fixing anymore and now she feels like she is not enough for her wife. But how could she possibly know if she is enough or not when she continues to avoid this heart-to-heart conversation with her wife. Callie Torres usually tends to be oblivion when it comes to Arizona’s inner emotional world and unfortunately neither of them does anything to open the other one’s eyes. Maybe Dr. Robbins should take note from Meredith and Cristina’s honest fight.
We can only hope that this would happen when Grey’s Anatomy comes back from its long hiatus. That’s what we do with Calzona all the time- hope, the couple who gives as hope about love and we hold on tightly on to hope that they will work things out.
Meanwhile in the hospital:
Meredith and Cristina’s friendship kept bubbling; the fight reached its breaking point with a bunch of honest truths;
Cristina and Shane hooked up;
Dr. Webber checked out of the hospital as a patient and after a while was back int OR;
Dr. Bailey started treating her OCD, after some typically stubborn Bailey fight and she got back in the OR too;
Alex’ junky father showed up again and things doesn’t look good for him after some heart complications;
Kepner’s sister came to town for the upcoming wedding;
Shane finally lost it;
Murphy was trying to fix her broken heart in a rather arrogant way;
Jackson finally stood up and said out loud how he feels about April (best love confession so far on Grey’s)
