“You didn’t lose anything! I did!… I did!”
“Apparently, I lost you!”
This is how season 9 Grey’s Anatomy finale ended for Callie and Arizona after Callie found out about Arizona’s infidelity. The screen faded to black and every Calzona fan was left with a mixture of boiling emotions. In the last three episodes things started rolling down the emotionally devastating and heartbreaking road. Tables turned, dramatically and probably unexpectedly for many. How did everything fall apart for this beloved couple once again?
Let’s go back to the beginning of the season and retrace Callie and Arizona’s emotional journey and try to find any kind of clues or hits we, the viewers might have missed out.
Season 8 finale left us all frozen and literally in the dark wondering if the doctors would make it alive out of the woods. One huge question mark was also Arizona Robbins’ life. When season 9 kicked off the writers took us three months later after the accident. They made an effort to be creative and tried to mislead us that the plane crash had claimed the life of the sunshiny doctor. And how could one not believe it? The medical staff was constantly starring at Callie with eyes full of pity and sorrow, Callie was hiding in supply closets crying her eyes out and telling Alex that sometimes things die. And they do, indeed. Towards the end of the episode the fate of Arizona has been revealed- the good man in a storm survived the horrific plane crash but at what cost? Her leg has been amputated and figuratively speaking she was dead. A glimpse of a dark version of Arizona Robbins was shown, a dark side hidden deeply underneath the sweet and sunny disposition.
What actually happened?
Episode 902 put all the pieces together- life treating infection, overwhelmed, desperate and hysterical Arizona, Callie Torres by her side, fighting to save the life of a patient and a wife and one impossible promise to keep. A promise that torn Callie and Arizona apart, a broken promise that later in the season finale resurfaced and raged like a merciless monster that has been gathering strength with every passing episode. Callie faced the harsh reality- Arizona’s leg couldn’t be saved. The decision was made, the promise was broken. And Callie fought, fought to save the life of her wife. However, part of Arizona died and resurrected and transformed itself into a cold, harsh, dark, venomous and resentful version of Arizona Robbins. Did we lose the full of joy doctor forever? No, not completely! A ray of hope started to make its way after Callie’s emotional breakdown and Arizona’s look of compassion and realisation that she wasn’t the only one struggling. After this very painful and heartbreaking bathroom scene, Arizona set herself on the road to recovery.
“I’m trying”. The good man in a storm was trying to accept her physical change, to adjust to it, she started fighting again to get back to who she is, to get back to Callie. The scared little bird waved her wings and then we saw an eagle souring the skies. Step by step Arizona got back up, got back to work. However, she continued keeping Callie at arm’s length not only intimately but also when she was experiencing a phantom limp pain. The good man in a storm kept pushing forward on her own because Callie needed a wife not a patient. All this continue until we were given the most beautiful, full of emotions scene in episode 18. Callie pushed gently again and Arizona finally let her guard off and all the walls she had built crumbled down and she let Callie in completely. Personally speaking, this is the moment when the actual healing and rekindling of Callie and Arizona’s relationship happened. And it was magical.
However, the question is: “do you believe in magic?” Magic is just an illusion, playing before our very eyes and tricking the mind. The penultimate episode with the same title set up the scene where we were proven that magic does not exist, but a very real and good- looking female doctor entered Grey- Sloan Memorial Hospital and immediately showed her interest in Arizona. Things started rolling, the storm was gathering strength, and Arizona lost her control and fell into the arms of the seductive and persistent Dr. Lauren Boswell. A vow was broken and adultery was committed. It didn’t take long for Callie to find out and put two and two together. All hell broke, a heated and devastating fight started between the wives and the painful truth has been revealed- Arizona hasn’t forgiven Callie for amputating her leg.
Is that the reason why Arizona kept Callie physically away from her for so long? Was that the hint? Could be. Is Arizona suffering from PTSD, did she and Callie fail to recognize it? Very possible. Whatever happened to the good man in a storm? People are capable of doing anything and sometimes they cross their own lines. Did Callie push Arizona too much? What does the future hold for these two people? Is Callie going to be able to forgive? These and many other questions will be answered when season 10 kicks off in September. Until then, put your seat belt on again, buckle up and get thrilled!
