Grey’s Anatomy has always been notorious for delivering emotional, intense and heart- breaking episodes through the years. Last Thursday’s episode was one filled with the sense of loss, grief, hope and love combined with small glimpses of joy to make the episode bearable.
April Kepner’s simple yet strong narration touched the subject of empathy and understanding, compassion and love.
The moving little baby Avery storyline, which the actors have been carrying to their best abilities of performance, finally reached its culmination and dissolved into shattered pieces of grieving tears of love. April and Jackson’s misfortune served as a reminder that medicine has its limits and even the most rational and cold- logical mind can turn to seek comfort and hope in the invisible arms of higher powers. Moreover, even a firm believer in God, like April Kepner, can feel lost, abandoned, frustrated and confused with God’s will. And yet, there is so much beauty, though painful when one simply gives in and let be carried to a peaceful place by their own aching heart.
And then candles were lit.
April and Jackson weren’t the only doctors who grieved the loss of a child. Amelia Shepherd found words to voice her own grief buried deep inside her heart. And those of the viewers who followed Private Practice were probably reminded of the ironic twist in Amelia’s storyline- the great brain surgeon gave birth to a brainless child.
Probably some may not see it as a big loss, but Major Hunt had also lost a child in the past despite the circumstances surrounding this loss. Nevertheless, Dr. Hunt felt it in his heart as a murder.
Dr. Bailey surely still carries the loss of George O’Malley in her heart. After all she was a mother to him, but a different kind of mother and he was her child, but a different kind of child.
The silence in the chapel and the silence of Dr. Robbins’ thoughts and quiet prayers most likely evoked memories of her own lost child.
Despite the gut wrenching and heart breaking episode, despite the fact that April and Jackson’s baby has been taken away from them, a little joy and light was blended in the episode through a couple who unexpectedly and to their own delight became parents. Regardless of their insignificant role, they brought the message of hope. Amelia’s patient too brought to the viewers a message of hope from literally the darkest place.
Peace and love, peeps! Hope beyond hope! Look for the light even in the greatest of darkness!
