Last Thursday Grey’s Anatomy treated us with a Halloween themed episode- spooky sounds, a ‘zombie’ patient, flesh- eating maggots, ghostly mentions of dead people and of course tiny humans in Halloween costumes. On Halloween Day the doctors kept treating patients and trying to trick the time so that they could tend to the life outside the hospital. Moreover, the thrilling day turned out to be inspirational for some doctors and a chilling nightmare for others.
Both Callie and Arizona delivered to us a mixture of some sweetness, sourness and bitterness that left an unidentified taste in our mouths. Whatever the writers are cooking, this Calzona pumpkin potion feels more like a poison rather than a remedy. But who knows, this poison may turn out to be curable and the remedy we all are wishing for, may be a death sentence.
With the opening of the episode we got our first chills and cold sweat when Leah Murphy silently tried to sneak out of Arizona’s bed. However, Arizona woke up and offered her breakfast. The young doctor put on the ‘easy-peasy-lemon- squeezy’ attitude and quickly got dressed and left the room. So, we were forced to face our haunting fear- Arizona and Leah did hook up.
Hopefully, this whole easy and rebounding thing for Dr. Robbins won’t blow up in her face once again and drag her into a deeper hole. Maybe this is Arizona’s way to go back to herself, to the woman we met back in season 5, the woman who used to date and have uncomplicated relationships, the cheerful woman who had infectious joy. Because right now Arizona’s life is all kinds of complicated and if Leah’s presence makes it feel easier somehow for the moment, so be it.
Speaking of complicated, case in point: at one of the nurses’ stations Callie and Arizona had an argument over Sofia’s Halloween costume- princess or astronaut. Arizona seemed all edgy, ready to pick a fight and go for the jugular with a competitive attitude, whereas Callie just threw in the towel and put an end to this verbal fight very quickly. Though, she was very close to engage in it, but this just showed how tired of fighting, screaming and shouting Callie is. So, she told Arizona she could get Sofia for a ‘trick or treat’ night. Later, Callie let Meredith know that she wouldn’t be coming to the Halloween party at the frat house (now Alex’ place) and the reason- Arizona would be there and there would be a chance of early Christmas fireworks.
This scene came as another cold reminder of how disconnected Callie and Arizona are, how far they are from each other and the only thing that barely holds whatever has left of this connection, is Sofia.
Since Callie decided to bail on the Halloween party, she found a quick solution how to spend the rest of the night- at the hospital keeping company to her patient. However, the ‘I’m scared of doctors’ patient gave Callie some food for thought on why she didn’t want to miss a Halloween night with her child.
Meanwhile, Dr. Robbins found a very upset and crying Leah in the residents’ lounge. With her typical Arizona calmness in her voice, Dr. Robbins encouraged Leah to talk and the young doctor told her about her nightmarish working day. In return Arizona offered her own scary story and comforted Leah. She was simply there for her as a mentor. And probably some of us couldn’t help but fell a little bit in love with Arizona again, because what we saw in this scene was the Arizona we all know, the woman who cares, the woman who knows how to fix people, the kind and compassionate Dr. Robbins.
Before the closing credits of the episode started rolling, we were treated with a very sweet scene in the Meredith’s ex house. Callie showed up, the hatches were buried for the night, a compromise has been made and little Sofia was dressed up as a Space Princess and both mommies were there to share this special Halloween moment for her.
Meanwhile in the hospital:
• Dr. Webber found a meaning to live again and embarked on a teaching journey with the young crop of residents; Webber and Meredith buried the hatches;
• Dr. Bailey got kicked off Webber’s case; Ben came home for Halloween; He quit the surgical programme in LA; Bailey was left disappointed;
• Meredith and Cristina’s friendship kept suffering and the bridge between them is burning slowly; at work Cristina got treated with a ‘zombie’ patient (the guy’s organs were inversed);
• Owen Hunt was experiencing difficulties in the ‘moving on’ department;
• Mousy’s ghost kept chasing after Shane through a patient; Edwards had some issues with her vision; Leah got bitten by a ‘zombie’;
• Zola’s Halloween costume inspired Derek for a new surgical technique;
• Alex and Jo made up;
• How adorable was baby Bailey as a pumpkin?
