Arizona Robbins is not the only one who has needs and desires. She wasn’t the only who has been constantly challenged and whose rough edges needed some smoothing. Certainly, she is not the only one sitting on the hot seat. All this Arizona shares with Callie Torres. There were times when Callie Torres was called selfish, stubborn and childish and she even came across as a woman who stayed out of obligation with Arizona after the plane crash. Callie Torres is this sweet and beautiful natural disaster, in a good way, which rocks not only Arizona’s world but her own as well.
Callie Torres is pretty much a straightforward character with the ‘I-get-what-I-want’ attitude, but that doesn’t mean she is shallow or that she lacks complexity and depth. Actually, the aim of her character development is complexity and growth through difficult and unpleasant situations and the way she handles them. If Arizona Robbins has many layers, that need to be peeled for her growth, Callie Torres is exactly the opposite; she needs to build layers for the same process. Both Callie and Arizona move upward, they just have different ways- imagine a flight of stairs- Callie has to build a solid stair to step on it firmly and move forward, Arizona, on the other hand has to uncover or lift the veil off each stair hidden beneath her feet.
Callie Torres has a pre- Arizona history on Grey’s Anatomy. Her character was introduced towards the end of season 2 as a love interest for George O’Malley. Her unsuccessful marriage to George and later another unsuccessful romantic involvement with Erica Hahn led her right in the arms of Arizona Robbins. But the question is….
Who is Callie Torres?
Callie Torres is a passionate woman with temper, a fairy tale kind of girl, who is impatient and persistent when it comes to chasing love, an idealist who loves to be happy and in love. She wears her heart on her sleeves and represents a true warrior of love- she gives her heart, people break it, she puts it back together and keeps moving forward. During her marriage with George she might have come across as needy and attention seeker, but she only wanted to be loved and needed the same way she wants and needs. All this make Callie vulnerable and insecure. When her heart got broken in the past, she used to look for the safety net, once offered by her father, but in her adult life, this safety net came in the form of alcohol, sex and Mark Sloan. Callie Torres is the kind of girl who loves her friends, throws parties, but when something or someone is in her way she gets mad and angry and fury and turns into a storm. And we have seen her stormy attitude many times.
Arizona Robbins happened to be the one who also managed to unleash the storm in Callie a bunch of times. But also she was the one through whom Callie learned how to tame it if not completely at least to some less devastating levels. Arizona broke Callie’s heart not once but several times and Callie kept coming back to her. When George cheated on her, Callie divorced him, but with Arizona she decided to give it another try. This isn’t just about love and wedding vows, this comes to show how much Callie has changed and matured, and there are no shortcuts and easy ways, especially when a child is in the picture.
What’s more, when Callie found out about Dr. Boswell she didn’t numb the pain with sex, like she used to. Obviously, she has outgrown at least one of her habits. But she was pissed and hurt to the point where she humiliated her wife in front of their colleagues. Surely, it was inappropriate, but when Callie is in pain, she is not ashamed to show her wounds to the public.
The post plane crash period wasn’t easy for Callie either. She felt as much scared and afraid as Arizona. She cared for Arizona, she tried to reach out to her, she bit her tongue a few times, and she was patient. As patient as we have never seen Callie before. If she was staying out of obligation with Arizona she would have never put up with all the abusive words Arizona threw in her face. She was understanding and tried not to push or force Arizona too much into anything. She simply wanted her Arizona back, something that Arizona wanted for herself as well. Because Callie is the kind of person who doesn’t give up easily on things, she wanted the same thing from Arizona and she showed her wife that she doesn’t have to give up even the simplest joy of the wheelie sneaks.
Callie Torres loves Arizona Robbins, but she tends to be oblivious and self-centred sometimes, she doesn’t always listens, sometimes misinterprets Arizona’s words, especially when her needs and desires are concerned, doesn’t always follow through when it comes to Arizona’s feelings and emotion. But she can be supportive and caring in her own way.
Here, in another nutshell is wrapped up Callie Torres. Another imperfect human being, who is very different from Arizona Robbins. However, their differences don’t pull them apart, but rather bring them closer together. Both of them express themselves in a different way. But what happens when these two are put in a relationship and have the power to break or make each other? What happens when one of them causes pain to the other, and yet they can’t stay away from each other?
