Grey’s Anatomy premiere opened its tenth season in a classic Grey’s fashion- with irony, metaphors, laughter, gut wrenching, heart stopping and brain bleeding moments. All of it intensely sealed in two hours while the doctors were working their white magic in the ORs and trying to clean the muddy mess in their personal lives.
Dr. Webber’s narration led us to the first glimpse of Callie and Arizona. “They say your life flashes before your eyes right before you die. The important moments, the moments that tested you…” This is what happened in this first brief and silent scene- Callie and Arizona died before each other’s eyes in boiling anger, immense hurt and helplessness. An important moment which will test the depth of their love and commitment. This moment that so much resembles and mirrors the fire fighters and the mudslide story. Callie’s anger was on fire and it didn’t take long to spread around and catch Arizona. Dr. Robbins was shamelessly exposed and burnt for her infidelity in front of a small group of spectators, her co-workers. In other words Callie pushed Arizona further into the mud.
Staying true to themselves, the writers weren’t shy and didn’t miss the opportunity to force Callie and Arizona to share a patient, an OR and an intern with a “what the hell” face. They made us hold our breath and our hearts code every time when these two ladies were sharing a scene together during the first part of the season premiere. As opposed to Callie’s pushing, Arizona was trying, unsuccessfully to pull them out of the mud. The push-pull “poker” game was voiced with lines like “You can’t make it worse. It’s already as bad as it is”, “We all say things we shouldn’t have” and charged with colliding emotions and lingering tension.
When the ladies didn’t play their push- pull game, they were reminiscing the past or calling themselves names. Callie found a peaceful moment in Meredith’s room, holding baby Bailey. While telling the story to Meredith how Dr. Webber caught her dancing in her underwear, the painful realisation hit her and it was written all over her face- Callie’s life wasn’t a dance anymore, Callie doesn’t dance anymore, Callie forgot how to dance, Callie lost her dance partner. Our hearts sank and broke when Callie’s tearful, silent and contemplative look screamed out loud in our faces- my wife and I stopped “dancing” a long time ago.
Meanwhile, Arizona bumped into Alex and Jo in a supply closet, where she had her own moment of frustration- she was edgy, all tensed up, calling herself a slut, and describing her marriage with ortho metaphor. These two, Arizona and Alex, do really know how to be plain honest and straightforward with each other. They don’t spare any words and know how to have each other’s back. We all agree, sometimes one has to break a bone to heal correctly and as Alex put it, it’s a good start to begin with ‘I’m sorry’.
The first half of Grey’s Anatomy season premiere begs two questions: Do Callie and Arizona stand a chance to learn how to “dance” again? Can we really anticipate a proper healing after the bone has been broken?
During the second half of the Grey’s season premiere Callie and Arizona’s strained relationship kept coding the same way as Dr. Webber and Brooks were coding. Both women kept crashing into each other with raw emotions. The tension between them continued to escalate bit by bit through the second episode.
Once again, Dr. Robbins tried to pull her wife and marriage out of the mud, pleading for just a conversation, hoping for her wife to listen to her and hear her out. Unfortunately, Dr. Torres, still on the war path, royally pissed, painfully hurt, had no ears, no patience and no willingness to listen let alone hear her wife. Arizona’s attempt has been cut out with a cold “I said, not now!” and Callie walked away.
The plot kept thickening when Arizona experienced the cold and harsh consequences of her adultery. The saddest and the most painful reality punched her in the gut when she got home to find that her wife and daughter were nowhere to be seen. For those brief seconds Arizona was in such a perfect denial, her mind refusing to accept what had happened until she entered Sofia’s room and the empty drawers spoke louder. Callie and Sofia were gone. But where? The ex- owner of a frat house, Meredith Grey, once again offered her home to shelter a broken person, but this time, the broken person was a mother with her child. In the dream house Callie cried her eyes out and drowned her pain and sorrow in Derek’s wine collection. Meanwhile, out of her mind Arizona was screaming at a nurse in the hospital, forcing her to page her wife.
But instead something else happened…The slightly delusional, post baby delivery Meredith worked her white mother magic and let Arizona know where her family was. And we already knew what was about to happen- the built up tension came to an end with an exploding confrontation and a fight over Sofia. While the heated argument was blazing inside the house and who talked who into doing something, Derek, Zola and Sofia were watching the stars.
Next day Callie made her bold decision and sealed hers, Arizona’s and Sofia’s fate for now- Sofia will spend two nights with Arizona, two nights with Callie and in the mean time Callie and Sofia will be temporary living in the dream house.
But a mother’s love is strong, so strong that crying and devastated Arizona showed up at the dream house to spend five minutes with her daughter. Callie was all fury and attacking but Cristina Yang would not rapture an aorta. She took Sofia from Callie and passed her to Arizona. And then we all were indulged with this intimate, beautiful and full of love moment between a mother and a daughter.
Apparently Callie and Arizona journey will be a long and more than bumpy ride. However, hope is not gone because under the ruins and the wreckage, that Arizona’s adultery had left, the precious and valuable treasure is still there- the love between Callie and Arizona is still alive, coding and barely breathing, but still there and one can see it in their eyes.
Meanwhile in the hospital:
· After numerous times of coding and two surgeries Dr. Webber opened his eyes;
· Bailey and Cristina brought some humour while trying to save Webber’s life;
· Cristina and Owen almost ended the sexy arrangement;
· Alex and Jo tried to find their lovey- dovey mojo;
· Jackson finally step up and put April in her right place;
· RIP Mousy- such an irony, a future neuro star died from brain bleeding;
· The new crop of interns finally started to kick ass.
