Last Thursday the beloved character of Callie Torres took us on a very emotional journey around her personal and professional life in real time and through flashbacks. Both of Callie’s worlds were shattered, events were happening, simultaneously, one after the other in a delightful and disastrous kind of way. Overwhelming events, which tested Callie Torres- the wife, Callie Torres- the doctor and Callie Torres- the human being. We were allowed to witness some beautiful, intimate and lovely moments between her and her wife. We saw Callie Torres’ professional crucifixion during a malpractice suit in court. What’s more, Dr. Torres delivered the message that ‘sorry’ doesn’t just seem to be the hardest word, ‘sorry’ is actually the hardest word to say. Unfortunately, being sorry is not enough when a mistake has been made, when the person responsible for that mistake has to carry the weight of their actions, when certain decisions can’t be undone. However, the loving Papa Torres pointed out that some mistakes may be fixed if only one is willing to try.
The medical case
A few months ago, during Meredith’s baby shower, the infamous Cristina Yang presented Callie Torres with a tempting medical case and later introduced the patient himself- a famous Olympic snowboard athlete, who needed a hip replacement. Dr. Torres jumped into the opportunity to perform a procedure for a very first time in her career as an Orthopaedic surgeon. When she said ‘yes’ to the surgery, everything started rolling in the wrong direction despite her extensive research, despite her best efforts to tackle one disaster after another. She fought for her patient, he was her priority. Complications after complications occurred which resulted in amputation of the patient’s both legs and Callie Torres was served with a malpractice suit. The trial didn’t go smoothly either. Dr. Torres had to jump through many hoops on fire before hearing the verdict of not guilty. Luckily, she wasn’t all alone during this nightmare- her friends/ colleagues were next to her, even Papa Torres flew from Miami to support his daughter. But probably the one person that gave Callie strengths not to fall apart, was her estranged wife. Because only Arizona Robbins knows what to do and how to do it when she bumps into upset Callie Torres in the ladies room (more on this later).
In a true Grey’s Anatomy fashion, it turned out that this entire fiasco could have been prevented if a letter containing vital information hadn’t dropped behind a piece of furniture. However, the mail wasn’t a priority at the time when Arizona was calling out Callie’s name and Callie’s mind was running towards some horrible places where something might have happened to Arizona.
The personal life
During Meredith’s baby shower Callie Torres was presented with one more tempting, sweet and heart melting offer- Arizona simply asked her to have another baby. The woman who used to run like a wild animal when it comes to babies, now she took the initiative and expressed a desire to extend the Robbins- Torres family. At that point we were given to breathe a few delightful, joyous, happy and lovely Calzona moments- over a bottle of white wine Callie and Arizona were picking up a sperm donor and even a blind would have been able to see the magic of love between the wives. The magical moment kept going on when Arizona’s pregnancy test turned positive and the entire scene was charged with love, joy and happiness. Their enthusiasm didn’t stop just there. Despite her big case in the hospital, Callie Torres still found the time to take her wife for house hunting. Everything was perfect, like a fairy tale- a baby, a house, a new beginning. Sadly, the fairy tale went wrong, the magic simply evaporated. Callie had to deal not only with her patient’s complications, but also with very unsettling news- Arizona told her that the baby had no heartbeat. This was the moment where Callie Torres put her patients first, before her wife’s needs and started losing Arizona.
Now the line “You didn’t lose anything! I did..!” makes much more sense. Loss after loss led the sunshiny Dr. Robbins to spiral down to the world of darkness and to cheat on her wife.
Some other Calzona delightfulness
The bathroom scene (nice callback from season 5): a crying Callie, comforting Arizona and a bathroom. This time there wasn’t a kiss to make Callie smile. There was a Sofia’s drawing and butterflies on Callie’s tights. Dr. Robbins hasn’t lost her touch how to make her woman not just smile but laugh. After months of screaming and not being able to talk to each other like a civilized people, Callie and Arizona shared a very special moment and most likely gave hope to those who have already lost it. Once again we saw the Arizona we all knew, the woman who knows how to pull Callie’s strings, the caring and loving Arizona.
Papa Torres: the other person who also knows how to handle Callie Torres. And his timing for a visit was perfect. The protective and supporting father even talked some sense into Callie and made her fight for her marriage by revealing very disturbing secret to Callie- he cheated on Callie’s mother.
On another note, how ridiculously funny was the eye contact scene between Arizona and Carlos, like a gun fight in the Wild West.
The closing scene: if your hope hasn’t been restored after the bathroom scene and the exchange of looks in the court room, then the last scene might have done its job more properly. Callie’s legs led her to the Arizona’s hotel room and asked her to ponder the thought of coming back home. Nice, simple and short request coming out of love.
After closing the door Arizona politely kicked Murphy out and lost herself into thoughts about Callie.
After the previous disastrous episode, the Callie centric one was quite a pampering, especially for those who like Callie Torres and for those who cheerlead Calzona. The episode was well thought, the sequence of events excellently corresponded with each other. The choice of medical case nicely related to Arizona’s amputation story. The acting was exquisite. From the beginning through the entire episode Sara Ramirez and Jessica Capshaw made us feel for their characters, made us cry with them and a ray of hope was given to us. Now Callie and Arizona have to fight and rebuild what they once had. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.
